The Milton Keynes Peace Pagoda was completed in 1980 at the
northern edge of Willen Lake in Willen, Milton Keynes. This was the first Peace
Pagoda in the western world. There is a Nipponzan Myohoji Order temple and
monastery nearby.
On Sunday 22nd June there was a ceremony at the Peace Pagoda
to celebrate its 34th year of being built.
The celebrations started at half past ten with chanting from
various Buddhist traditions. From 11.30 there were multi-faith prayers for
peace. And from 12.15pm to 1pm there were speeches and messages of peace. Then
there was a lunch interval for one hour.
After lunch, there was music, dance and cultural
performances. Joan Harris gave a speech. There was also bell ringing with Hanna
Drexel and a group of residents from Camphill Milton Keynes. People who went to
this event also sung song songs with Joan Harris.
I found this event to be very interesting. There have been
anniversary celebrations at the Peace Pagoda ever since it was first built.
